Monday Flowers – It’s Peony Time!!

Where do I start? I can hardly believe it is over a month since I have been here – I had intended a quick return after my two week holiday in Dubai but the weeks have flown by without time to sit down and put pen to paper (or rather fingers to keyboard but that just doesn’t have the same ring!). The garden is transitioning into summer with the last of the flowering shrubs, the first roses, bearded iris and a host of biennials adding colour to the beds. Asparagus and rhubarb is in full flow and I have broad beans and peas that will be ready to eat in a week or two. I am hoping to find the time to pick the first gooseberries this week to make a gooseberry jelly and a delicious muscatel cordial and I still need to go around the garden doing the ‘Chelsea Chop’.

The year really does feel like it is racing away – spring has been so beautiful but its final days are now marked by the arrival of the peonies. These beautiful blousy flowers are popping open all over my garden – the result of spending the last 7 years indulging my peony addiction by adding ever more plants to my beds.

Last year was a complete peony disaster with almost all of my buds rotting on the stems before they opened. May and June were cold and very wet last year and my peony beds in the Cutting Garden were flooded for quite a long time causing all kinds of problems – I did fear for the long term health of my plants but they have bounced back with vigour this year. The spring has been warm and dry and the peonies have responded by producing the best crop of buds I have ever seen – I am keeping my fingers crossed they will all result in beautiful blooms like the three that I cut to share with you today. These are Bowl of Beauty in the centre, Alexander Fleming to the left and Sarah Bernhardt to the right.

I think the warm spring has brought all the peonies and bearded irises out early this year – I am not sure I have ever had so many flowers in May before. I hope that the very heavy rain showers we are having this week will not do too much damage.

I have put the peonies in a jug with some lovely lilac and pink stocks today. Stocks are a flower that always frustrate me in the growing process, but they are an absolute delight when the flowers appear. The seed for these stocks was sow in January and kept under cover until mid April. I planted some plants under cover in my greenhouse bed and the rest outside, but there was only about a weeks difference in the flowering date. The advantage of having some under cover is that they won’t be flattened by the heavy rain, so I will probably do the same thing next year. Also they look lovely flowering in the greenhouse at the feet of the sweet peas which are pumping out the flowers now.

I planted a combination of lavender stock seeds and a mix called Turkish Delight which is a gentle array of pink, lilac and white shades. The seeds were from Plants of Distinction and although stocks are usually thought of as late spring flowers these are called All Year Stocks and say they can be sown year round –  I am going to sow a couple more trays to see if I can have stocks later in the year.

We had a fabulous holiday in Dubai and I came back feeling very refreshed, although it feels like a long time ago now. I will try and write a post about our holiday soon and share some photos of our trip with you. Another post which I really must write is about the Gather & Grow workshop which took place on 4th May. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and hope that our attendees had as much fun as we did!  I did not get as many photos as I would have liked – I was a bit busy on the day – but there is a video which you can watch on my Instagram account and I will try to post it here when I write up the day. Gather & Grow for Summer is taking place on 22nd June and there are a couple of places left if anyone is interested. This time I will be concentrating on getting the most from your garden roses and growing annuals and biennials for a flower filled summer and Brigitte will be using the roses, annuals, herbs, fresh foliage and any peonies that are still flowering to create a beautiful summer centrepiece.

Last week I made it back to the Chelsea Flower Show after a 3 year break and had a very inspiring day. I have come back full of ideas to add more interest to my borders and I am keeping my fingers crossed for a beautiful addition to the garden that I am hoping to buy. Next week I might be visiting the new RHS show at Chatsworth which is very exciting – I went to Chatsworth for the first time with my mother last September, so it will always hold a special place in my heart as the last house and garden visit we made together.

As ever on a Monday I am linking up with Cathy at Rambling In The Garden to join in with her challenge to find something from the garden to put in a vase every week of the year. I am not doing to well with the every week bit this year, but I have set my aim for the year to really get on top of my garden and I am spending a lot of time outside getting my hands dirty, leaving very little free time for my photography or writing. I do feel that progress is happening though and although I will never be completely on top of this garden I am at least feeling a little less overwhelmed.

So, with a list of posts I would like to share with you, as well as a long overdue catch up of goings on in the garden, I will say goodnight and wish you a very happy gardening week!

In A Vase On Monday – Welcoming The Peony Season

I have to apologise for my two week absence from Peonies & Posies. I have been head down in my borders most days, working frantically to try and get on top of the many weeds that are exploding out of the ground at great speed and trying to get all of my annuals and dahlias planted out now that the risk of frost has passed.

I have planned to get out with my camera on many days, but somehow the evening has arrived with no photos being taken – there have been many garden highlights that I would have loved to have shared but I just have to get on top of the borders before I can indulge myself with camera time!

Gardening is as much about preparing for the seasons ahead as it is about enjoying the moment and I have come to realise this spring just how important the autumn jobs are to the performance of the garden in the next year. Having failed to do any work in my garden between September and December I have found that the borders have been overrun with weeds this year. Also I was short of tulips as so many bulbs never made it into the ground and most of my biennial plants started last June went straight into the compost, so I am now missing the lovely honesty, sweet rocket and foxgloves that filled my vases last year. Thankfully as the peonies start to open and I am planning this years round of sowing biennials I feel that I have finally come full circle and can start to enjoy the garden again without constantly bemoaning what I am missing!

This week is just a quick look at the very first peonies to flower this year, which I have been enjoying in a vase for the last few days.

Red-Peony

Red-Peony

This is peony Red Charm – a very early double flowered peony. I picked it when the buds were fat and showing colour but had not started to open – I find this is the best way to get a long vase life out of a peony flower. If you wait until the flowers are open before picking they tend to drop their petals very quickly once in the warmth of the house.

On a sad note I have lost almost all my chickens to Mr Fox in the last week. My 4 Buff Orpingtons are fine as they sleep safely tucked up in a stable, but the many feral chickens that had moved in from next door were not tame enough to keep in a chicken house and always preferred to sleep in the trees. We have been fox free for the 6 years we have lived here but in the last week that has changed. My garden now seems a very quiet place and my lovely Buff Orpingtons look lost without their friends and in particular without their favourite cockerel who looked after them so well. This sad change is going to take some getting used too.

As ever on a Monday I am linking up with Cathy at Rambling In The Garden to join in with her challenge to find something from the garden to put in a vase in the house – do pop over to her blog to have a look at what she and the others have found this week.

In A Vase On Monday – A Peony Lunch – Part 2

Welcome to ‘In A Vase On Monday’ when I am linking up with Cathy at Rambling In The Garden to join her challenge to fill a vase for the house from the garden every week.

This week the flowers are from my garden and they are in a vase (or similar), but I have to admit that I did not arrange them today. I feel like I am cheating a bit this week, but time is very short in June, so I am going to show you the flowers I made for yesterday’s lunch. I took these photos for my ‘Flowers On Sunday’ post, but we had such a lovely afternoon that it lasted most of the day and it was far too late to blog last night.

I am starting today with a view from the drawing room window – this was taken at about 6.30am yesterday and the light was beautiful. You can see peony Adolphe Rousseau growing in the bed with lupin Masterpiece.

Garden View

For the table I chose six of the best peony blooms and placed them in individual vessels along the table. I love this style of flower arrangement on a dining table as the beautiful blooms take up very little of the space and can easily be moved about as needed. Shown individually I think they are even more stunning than when placed in a big arrangement. On the table you can see Gay Paree and Adolphe Rousseau.

Peony Lunch

There were still some beautiful Sarah Bernhardt buds just about to open.

Peony in Bottle

I chose a variety of containers for the table – a few bottles and some small silver bowls gave a good height variation.

Peony Lunch

I particularly love this Sarah Bernhardt bloom in a silver bowl.

Looking across from the dining table you can see the seating end of the drawing room. I placed two posies of peonies on the tables.

Peony Posies

On the table in the window a mixed posy including Gay Paree, Sarah Bernhardt, Adolphe Rousseau and Duchess de Nemours.

Peony Gay Paree

On the coffee table an arrangement of Festiva Maxima, a pinky white double flower with crimson flecks. This peony has a beautiful old rose scent.

Peony Duchess de Nemours

On the mantle the beautiful Duchess de Nemours – my Sarah Raven bowl is always perfect for flowers on this mantle.

Peony Duchess de Nemours

I added a few tea lights filled with single blooms to stretch the flowers out along the mantle.

To finish tonight I just wanted to show you a close up of the Edwardian wine glasses that I was very fortunate to find in an antique centre before Christmas. I love etched glass and have struggled to find anything like this that was affordable so I snapped these up when I spotted them tucked away amongst piles of other glasses. The beautiful morning light showed them off perfectly.

I hope you have enjoyed my ‘cheat’ today. I have been very busy all day planting out my dahlias in the heat and then bottling elderflower cordial that I luckily made just in time before the flowers went over. Next week I will make sure to prepare a vase on Monday – I still have a few peonies waiting to bloom but if this heat continues I may have to chose a new flower by next week!

I hope you will pop over to Cathy’s blog to see what she and the others have made this week. There are an increasing number of us joining in with Cathy’s meme these days – please do feel free to add a contribution. I am sure Cathy would be delighted!
