Welcome to this week’s In A Vase On Monday, when I am linking up with Cathy at Rambling In The Garden to join in her challenge to find something from the garden to put in a vase every week.
Earlier today I was thinking of calling this post “Rain Stops Play” as the weather has been so awful here for much of the day. The sun finally came out at around 5pm and I was able to get out to pick some soggy blooms and take some quick pictures.
In contrast to my last vase which was the very blousy bowl of lilacs and tulips, this week I have chosen something very simple.
The flowering of the allium Purple Sensation is another highlight in my gardening year and every autumn I add more of these stunning bulbs to my garden. They are flowering en mass this week in the bed behind the greenhouse and in the Cutting Garden – I will try and take some photos to share with you later this week.
These perfect bowls of colour always add a designer feel to otherwise wayward spring borders! I bought todays ‘vase’ at the Chelsea Flower show 3 years ago, so it seemed appropriate to use it today. These three milk bottles are actually joined together to make one container.
The lilac is still looking good, but will be over very soon so I had to make sure I get my fix.
The alliums look very different in close up.
Just as I finished photographing this vase Ruby decided to jump up on the window sill and have a look inside to see what I was up to – I could not resist taking a few pictures of her.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for some better weather for the rest of the week so that I can get out and clear the sticky weed that is creeping through every border at an alarming rate!
As ever thank you to Cathy for hosting and I hope you will pop over to her blog to see what she and the others have made this week. I am now going to catch up with the days goings on at Chelsea and I hope to back later this week with a look around the garden.
The weeds have taken over here and I am resigned that I will have to slowly move through and try to get a strong hold by fall….and the vase this week is amazing in its color and simplicity…I am looking for a vase similar and no luck so far…the storm clouds are gathering here and we are expected to get cool weather again just when I am about to plant out my warm weather loving flowers and veggies…adorable kitty too!
Have you seen the book Windowsill Art published by St. Lynn’s Press? Your display today reminds me of her windowsill art.
So stylish Julie. I’m still waiting for my alliums to open. I’m coming to the conclusion that my small shady garden 20 miles from London is way behind others much further north.
So elegant ! I love your close ups, and they show the blossoms beautifully . Ruby reminds me of my Tortilla cats, now departed. She is beautiful and so curious !
Lovely idea to keep it simple and let those Alliums show off! My allium season is only just beginning, though I must admit I am looking forward to my chives flowering even more, so I can eat them! Your weather is coming our way tomorrow, but we will be glad of some decent rain after only short showers recently. Hope the clouds blow over soon for you!
Beautiful. Love the shades of purple and contrast of flower shapes. susie
You have convinced me to plant allium, it looks great. As usual, your vase and photos are simply wonderful, Julie!
Your Alliums are simply gorgeous Julie, when I picked mine and brought them inside they lost almost all their colour, I suppose it must have been too dark for them; I don’t remember it ever happening before, has it ever happened to you with Alliums or other flowers?
Purple Sensation makes a wonderful statement in the May garden.
STUNNING photos Julie – and thanks for showing how effective minimalism can be. There is a lovely lilac in a neighbour’s garden here but not within reaching distance…! I was thrilled to have our rain yesterday as it was just what the garden needed and we are forecast more today but so far it is a lovely morning, albeit still early! Thanks for sharing and hope you and your Mum enjoyed Memory Lane.
Hi Julie,
Reading your beautiful blog after a very long gap. Had to catch up with all your beautiful posts by tomorrow. Lovely lilac and allium. Loved the smokey shot of allium very much. Hope all is well with you .
As usual beautiful pictures. The arrangement is such an elegant collection and the closeups really show the beauty of the blooms. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed just how subtly colored individual lilac blooms are!
