For Valentine’s Day I thought I would share with you a few romantically inspired flower arrangements that I have made in recent years. As you have probably guessed – I love any excuse for a bit of flower arranging!
The first is a door wreath made for a Valentine’s Party that we held a couple of years ago. All the guests were instructed to wear something romantic and each couple contributed their special song to the romantically inspired playlist. After the quiet post New Year period the guests were in the mood for a party and a great evening resulted.
Next I have some beautiful roses that I found last year on the flower stall at the market. Really you should not buy your own red roses, but these were too good to miss!
Last year we were invited to a Valentine Supper and I contributed the table arrangement. I was lucky to find copious amounts of red carnations at the supermarket on special offer, so these inspired my arrangement. Until recent years I was not a fan of carnations, but having seen them used almost as topiary on a number of occasions I am now a convert. You need to purchase your carnations a good few days before the event to give them time to open fully. Then choose your oasis shape – in this case a wreath so that I could fit the red tea lights into the centre. Finally cut the stems very short and fill the oasis with your chosen colour of carnations. The final effect is simple but opulent. I added hypericum berries and pearl pins to add to the glamorous feel.
Finally the heart shaped door wreath that I made earlier this week. It is still looking fresh hanging outside on the front door. Fortunately there is an overhanging porch above the door which is giving protection against the heavy rain and wind that has been with us all week.
I wish you all a happy Valentine’s Day!
You are so talented. Your arrangements are beautiful. I have never liked Hypericum but the way you use the berries is making me see it with new eyes.
I never liked shop bought carnations either but arranged like that they are gorgeous.
I am so glad you like them – I used to rip hypericum out of the garden and felt the same way as you about carnations – but now I love using both! Thank you Chloris for your kind comments!
Yes, I am thinking differently about hypericum too, having seem them in two different arrangements this week! Your arrangements are so much nicer than plain red roses, Julie!
Thank you Cathy – I am glad you are having second thoughts about hypericum. I like it both as a plant and for cut berries. It does self seed but I find it is one of those plants that goes well wherever it pops up and if it is a problem I weed it out whilst it is young.
Thinking differently is not the same as replacing it though… ! 😉
I agree: I stayed away from carnations for years! So boring and tacky and uncreative, I thought. But I too have changed my mind! Of course, they have to be very fresh and in just the right colors. Combined with other flowers or greens they really do make a wonderful statement!
Thank you Libby – something else that I love about carnations is that they are long lasting and quite cheap – neither of which you can say about most cut flowers! You are right about the colour – there are some truly fabulous shades available these days. I just wish I could grow the large florists carnations in my garden.
Well done–very effective arrangements. (I always have like hypericum berries.)
Thank you – it is good to hear from another hypericum fan!!
You are so clever and creative. They are all beautiful. I hope you had a romantic day yesterday. X
Thank you Alison and yes I did have a romantic day. He came up trumps again!
