Welcome to Flowers On Sunday – I hope you have had a lovely weekend!
Ranunculus just might be my favourite spring flower – the delicate tissue paper petals and fragile pastel shades never fail to delight. This weekend I was lucky to find some stunning white ranunculus at the market, which I have had lots of fun photographing today. The weather this week has been particularly dull until today – what a surprise to wake up to a bright and sunny day – a perfect backdrop for some photography!
I arranged the ranunculus loosely in this silvered vase and used a swatch of pale grey fabric as a base. A beautiful glass cookie jar (a wedding present) filled with pussy willow since Christmas and my little silver love bird added the accents.
These ranunculus were almost closed when I bought them yesterday, so I was delighted to find them fully open this morning after a night in the warm kitchen.
I could not resist selecting a flower for a solo performance – a lovely grey velvet made the perfect background. I converted this to black and white as the colours were so subtle.
Here is the same flower with a darker grey background and in colour.
After all the photographs I moved the flowers to a shelf in the dining room where they will spend the week. I tried both black and white and colour for this shot.
I hope you have enjoyed Flowers On Sunday and I will be back with something completely different tomorrow for In A Vase On Monday.
lovely but so much like ranunculus.
Actually you are right – I shouldn’t sit down to write so late on a Sunday!
I love the contrast of silver + white, I like the black and white..they are so elegant, and look like paper flowers that someone made….not something living- Just beautiful:-)
I think you are right Robbie – black and white is all about atmosphere rather than reality. I love black and white photos, although I know they are not everyones cup of tea.
Such beautiful images Julie! Love seeing your posts 🙂
Tasha
Thank you so much Tasha!
I love your posts-inspirational
Thank you!
Beautiful photos, as ever, Julie. I prefer the ones in colour. The colour of the flowers is more cream than white, and the shininess of the other items is evident.
Thank you Alison – I can never decide which ones I like best so I end up showing both the colour and B&W version. In fact you have no idea how hard it is to pick the pictures for the posts – I always take a lot of shots and then try to narrow the collection down to a manageable number and choose 5 or 6 from those. Sometimes it is really hard to pick that final list – it often takes longer than writing the post!
Have you ever tried growing ranunculus? They are one of my absolute favourite flowers. Would love to grow them. Gorgeous photos!
I tried to grow ranunculus outside a couple of years ago without success. This year I have a few in pots in the greenhouse – the roots have appeared through the bottom of the pots and a few shoots are now showing, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for success. I will certainly post some pictures if this works.
Hi – yes, I was puzzled too when I saw the first photo and was going to ask you what sort of anemone they were!! I love ranunculus but haven’t grown them successfully yet – am determined to try again and follow instructions to the T (strange phrase that)! These white ones are stunning, so pure and virginal – and really lend themselves to black and white photography. Thanks for sharing them, Julie.
Thank you Cathy – please let us all know if you are successful.
Such stunning photographs, they are so beautiful. Thanks for visiting my blog, its good to hear from someone new.
Thank you Pauline – I always enjoy reading your blog!
Very elegant and stylish and simple all the same – well done!
Thank you Annette – when a flower is as beautiful as these you can’t go wrong!
